Tip! Choosing rugs for kids’ rooms can be one of the more fun and challenging parts of a redecorating project. Let your imagination run wild.

Oriental Persian rugs come from large cities such as Isfahan and from villages such as Haghighi, Mahan and Arak. One of the most famous Persian rugs came from a village named Ardabil. Still, not one of those locations has produced the type of Persian rugs that once felt the feet of Persian aristocrats and their slaves. Those were the oriental Persian rugs in the ancient city of Persepolis.

Twenty-five centuries ago Persepolis, located about 20 minutes driving time from present-day Shiraz, contained the royal palace of the Achaemenian dynasty. In that palace glittered golden candlesticks, golden bowls and golden pitchers. On the floor of that palace stretched beautiful, oriental Persian rugs. The weavers of the rugs for the palace at Persepolis wove into their carpets thin, gold threads.

Twenty-five centuries ago, when Alexander the Great marched with his army into Persia, his forces captured the city of Persepolis. Alexander and his men gawked at the beauty of the oriental Persian rugs. It is possible that one or more of those rugs captured the eye of the men who wanted to plunder the palace. These evil men rolled-up the rugs that most struck their fancy, loaded them onto the army’s carts and hauled them away. Today, hidden somewhere in Afghanistan, a lovely Persian rug must lie on the floor of some home or business.

Tip! If you’re looking for rugs that will coordinate with fabrics and wall colors already in place, consider custom design. It’s not much more expensive than a good quality off the rack rug, and you’ll be assured of a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art on your floor.

How many oriental Persian rugs did Alexander and his men take out of Persia? There is really no way to know. Historians are sure, however, that many Persian rugs went up in smoke. Alexander eventually put a lighted torch to all of the buildings in Persepolis. For that reason, those beautiful oriental Persian rugs, with their exquisite golden threads, remain no more than the subject of tales written by Alexander and his men.

Perhaps someday, someone in Afghanistan will uncover one of those exquisitely beautiful Persian rugs.
