A Brief History of Tibetan Rug Industry

The Tibetan rug industry came into being when several Tibetans migrated to Nepal during the political upheaval in the early 1960s. In order to exist in the foreign land these refugees established a small scale cottage industry with the help of the Swiss government. Small and traditional Tibetan rugs were made and sold to the tourists who had begun to show an interest in Nepal as a potential tourist destination. So the creation of these rugs also assisted Nepal tourism at that point of time.

Tibetan rugs and carpets became so popular in the west by 1980s that it became the second largest industry of Nepal. While earlier Germany was the foremost importer of the Tibetan rugs and carpets, American buying houses also started taking an interest in the rugs in those colors and styles that suited the American

markets. To this day Europe and America are the foremost markets of these exquisite hand woven rugs.
